The valve plug rises, and the compressed air can flow to the top of the piston at this time. Compressed air makes the piston and blade move downward, and shoots straight nails/yard nails/steel row nails, etc. out of the gun chamber. When the piston moves downward, the air in the piston is pushed back into the air chamber through a series of holes. As more air flows into the gun chamber, the air pressure increases. When you release the trigger, compressed air returns the valve plug to its original position and prevents air from flowing into the piston head.
